Twitch streamer Kai Cenat, in the midst of a grueling Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree marathon, has responded to complaints about the Elden Ring DLC’s difficulty. With 404 deaths logged over 32 hours of gameplay, Cenat is well acquainted with the challenges presented by the new content. Despite this, he has dismissed complaints about the difficulty level, calling them a “skill issue.”
Cenat recently completed the base version of Elden Ring after an arduous 1,700 deaths across 167 hours. Now, focusing on the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, he has spent over 50 hours and suffered another 500 deaths but is nearing the final boss. Despite the obvious struggles, Cenat has little sympathy for players who are review-bombing the DLC over its difficulty.
“I’m getting through these motherfuckers,” Cenat remarked during his stream, referring to the bosses he had beaten. Addressing those who complain, he said, “I’m ass and you’re ass. But you’re ass though, because you really say it’s too hard. Put your big boy pants on, go out there, and go fight.”
Cenat’s criticism is directed at those who expected an easier experience. “This is the first major release since the actual game two years ago. If you went through all that hassle two years ago, why the fuck would they make a DLC for you to breeze past in a day or two? Make it make sense.”
His comments highlight a key point about FromSoftware’s DLCs, known for being more challenging than the base games. This reality seems to have escaped many in Elden Ring’s broader audience. Moreover, game director Hidetaka Miyazaki has indicated that Shadow of the Erdtree is comparable in size to the base game’s Limgrave area, suggesting that it was never intended to be completed quickly.
Cenat’s stance echoes Miyazaki’s philosophy on game difficulty. Miyazaki has previously stated, “If we really wanted the whole world to play the game, we could just crank the difficulty down.” This approach underscores the developer’s commitment to providing a challenging experience for dedicated players.
